Modern Warfare 2 Cost $50m To Make, Grosses $550m In 5 Days

Infinity Ward has really turned the Call of Duty series into a cash cow. According to latimes.com, people close to the project said Modern Warfare 2 cost around $40 million to $50 million to develop and had a $200 million launch budget. In the week of the laucnh, Modern Warfare 2 brought in $550 million in just 5 days. If you do the simple math, that’s a profit of ~$500 million in just 5 days alone.

No wonder ActivionBlizzard had talks about a third studio producing CoD games, alongside veteran Infinity Ward and Treyarch. While Infinity Ward will handle the “modern warfare” aspect of the series, rumors are abound that the next CoD will be set in the Cold War, courtesy of Treyarch. What the third studio will handle yet remains to be known. At this rate, expect to see a new CoD game every year. Sigh. Hope CoD doesn’t go the way of the now defunct Medal of Honor. And can we have support for dedicated PC servers in the next installment please?
