Games I’m Playing Now: Amnesia, Bad Company 2, DOW 2: Chaos Rising, Torchlight, FF XIII And More
Thought I’d give you guys a heads up at what I’m playing right now and what I’ve finished in the last week or so.
Now Playing:
Amnesia: The Dark Descent (PC)
First up is this awesome survival horror game called Amnesia: The Dark Descent from a relatively small indie developer called Frictional Games. And by “awesome” survival horror I mean that the atmosphere and setting truly surpasses those of recent big-budget horror games.
The game doesn’t give you a gun, and that makes it even more nerve wracking. Stay too long in the shadows or experience too much unnatural events and monsters and you’ll slowly go insane. Your head will start to spin, vision will be blurred, you’ll have a hard time standing straight and any controls that you input will be sluggish. This makes for a very frightening experience in damp, barely lit corridors and basements. Monsters are few but you always get the feeling that someone is following you.
I’ve just played 2 hours of it with the lights out, sound way up and it’s one hell of an experience. IGN says, “few games are able to conjure up an atmosphere this genuinely frightening” and gave the game 8.5/10
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (PC)
Hmmm, where do I start about this shooter from DICE and EA?
Well I invited my friend over to play and after the opening cinematics rolled, he still hadn’t start playing. He didn’t realize that the cinematics had ended and he was staring at the games gorgeous graphics (the first night time mission).
This game looks a beauty at 1920X1080p with all the settings cranked up in DirectX 11. Couple that with the fun (and technically impressive) destructible environments (taking out entire buildings with RPGs never gets old), immersive sound and a well paced campaign and you have a hit better than the just-one-explosion-after-another-nonsense-plot that is Modern Warfare 2.
Check out the Gamersworldbd Battlefield: Bad Company 2 review.
Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising (PC)
Relic makes some awesome RTS games. But I’m ashamed to say that I didn’t play the original DoW II while it released last year.
So, I went ahead and picked up both the original one and it’s expansion Chaos Rising.
If you’re looking for a traditional RTS experience, you will be disappointed. Relic eschews the base building (although you can capture special structures for bonuses) and unit producing formula for a DoTA type gameplay experience.
See, you start with only four squads. If they die, you just retreat and get more reinforcements. If the squad leader is incapacitated, you have to revive him with another squad. If all of them dies, it’s game over kiddo.
That’s not to say the game isn’t fun. Using each squad’s unique abilities (Thaddeus’ jump pack ability and artillery strikes never gets old), careful cover and micromanagement will lead you to victory. Your end mission score is determined by how well you performed which in turn determines how many additional missions you can tackle.
The sound in this game will really blow you away. Crank up the audio in your 5.1 speakers and the next time you call in an artillery strike or lay down suppressive fire, you’ll really feel you’re like in the midst of the battlefield.
Torchlight (PC)
Just this: if you can’t wait for Diablo III to release, Torchlight is your answer. The cartoony graphics, randomized dungeons, and constant mobs and loot drops will keep you busy till Diablo III finally releases.
Final Fantasy XIII (PS3)
Demos: Vanquish (PS3), Quantum Theory (PS3) and DeathSpank (PS3)
By now you’re probably wondering why on earth am I not playing the latest blockbuster releases? Well kiddo, I finished ’em already.
Games I’ve Finished In The Last Week:
Mafia II (PC):
Don’t compare it with GTA. GTA never takes itself seriously. With Mafia II, the characters are all believable and you’ll take a personal interest in the tale of Vito Scaletta to him being a “made man” and his eventual downfall. Varied and fun missions throughout.
Metro 2033 (PC)
The developers of Metro 2033 split off from the original STALKER group. And for the better.
Metro 2033 is a polished, beautiful and a scary experience. Ammo is painfully scarce and couple that with the fact that it is also used as the game’s currency. Most of the game takes place in dark tunnels infested with monsters. But the first time you travel to the frozen wasteland surface, you can’t help feel a bit too lonely and desolate, knowing there is probably a bigger monster just waiting to kill you.
The ending could have been better though.
Splinter Cell: Conviction (PC)
Alan Wake (Xbox 360)
Red Dead Redemption (PS3)
Witcher: Enhanced Edition (PC)

One thing that I’m not sure about – does the new Medal of Honor have destructible environments? Boy, RPG’ing a whole building just to kill the guy inside never gets old.
About Amnesia. You should consider getting it only if you are INTO SLOW paced survival horror games. No guns and you can’t fight the monsters. But hey, the environments really draw you in.
About F1 2010. Thought about getting the PS3 version. Can’t find it anywhere! š Got it for PC and one word – awesome F1 experience. I have committed to play the full season length (3 Practice/Qualifying and then race and total 7 seasons in career). Trust me, fiddling with the car setup, tyre and fuel loadout options and then beating your opponent by 0.5s in qualifying is a treat!
Sadly I picked Virgin Racing and their cars are ridiculously underpowered. I mean the guy in front of me in the straights just pulls ahead like its nobody’s deal. Still, working my way to the top teams.
LOL. Just now I was in a 17 lap race with only 1 lap to go and in 1st position. Do I need to say the electricity went out?! š„ š„ And no, my UPS is dead.

I just blatently said that about medal of honor in excitement š³ And Amnesia seems to me like a unique game as its different from the other survival horror games as u mentioned.I will get it then.Yeah i agree with u anytime of the day that F1 2010 is the best experience of formula 1 yet.I picked up lotus racing and like the virgin racing its underpowered but i have learned that from the first three offers HR Corsworth (name or spelling might be wrong) is the best bet.I hope codies increase the number of seasons in the next iteration.I aint playing that big like u.I am also working my way to the top of the ladder too and i am going through the short race weekend and lap size is 20%.And its deplorable to see a hard earned race win to be stripped from u šæ its unthinkable to game in bd without a ups now a days cuz of the lack of electricity supply we have šæ Get a UPS asap or u will be again shoved in the hot water by the damn electricity šæ

It’s so pitiful that a great victory just fell out of your grasp due to the damn load-shedding. šæ Bring off a UPS or all those strenuous exertions of yours will result in no avail, bro.

@sng425
same kind of incident happened to me today the dissimilarity was that my ups power ran out when i just stepped on the final lap.After electricity came i won that race again anyway cuz i had a good qualifying session and started the race from no#1 from the grid so it was easier.It was my 13th race of the game and became the first race i won which i got pole in both qualifying and practice sessions in the process.

I really have to get me a good UPS. Problem is, I use a 1000W PSU, so UPS can’t handle the load. The previous UPS would always stop (causing the PC to restart) when the electricity went out and then provide backup. Hooked up PS3 to that with no problem. Then again the PS3 consumes a fraction of the power.
@Rabbi
I feel your pain bro. Race 13? Congrats! I’ll be qualifying for my 4th race (Shanghai) LOL. Playing it seriously. All assists off (only traction to medium) and AI set to professional, Long Race Weekend and Laps of 30%. Yup, I’m taking this slow and seriously. š
Sep 28th, 2010 at 3:27 am
@TheGamingWiz
You are extremely serious it seems š i feel so stressed on controlling that car in the medium diffiulty and it took me a while to get a race win for that.Your hands must be handful on professional difficulty and i hate the fact when the car slips occasionaly during turns šæ which makes me lose a lot of places even if its one slip during a race,so i am cautious around turns at the moment by slowing down.I use the presetted short race weekend and 20% laps of the total grand prix.I hated the malaysian track and that track is the hardest i have played in the game and i got Disqualified only on that race š

It’s ostensible that your UPS can’t handle it as a 1000W PSU is way too much for it to handle. I’ve got two UPS, the first one provides me the backup of my PC, while the other one is hooked up with my Xbox 360, PS3 and my HDTV. It might seem that I’m overpowering my UPS with these things but actually I’m not. An Xbox 360 consumes up to 187 Watts while gaming whereas the PS3 slim only consumes only 96 Watts while playing video games. Besides, I don’t game on both my Xbox 360 and PS3 simultaneously. So it’s easy for my UPS to handle all of this things at once.
@Rabbi
It’s good to see that you’re having fun with F1 2010. I also got mine yesterday but haven’t played it yet.

@Sng425
Yup, I know. It’s really old. One funny thing. When I’m doing light work (browsing the net or even watching movies) the UPS will give backup just fine. Only when playing games as the GPU pushes the PSU to the max does the UPS falter. I’ll be getting a new one shortly.
