Well its not a good idea if you use live… bcoz the new FW has a new AP 2.5 security update which basically marks your console if its modded and you’ll eventually get banned when the winter 2010 banning starts…

Pagla07 is right. Don’t connect your modded console to Live.

It’s completely safe to apply this method if you don’t use Xbox Live. Even if you do sign in to Live, I don’t thing you’ll promptly get banned as MS doesn’t ban a single user instantly. They’ll mark your console first and then ban it when the entire banning process starts, as Pagla07 said. Note that, whenever MS marks your console you’ll see that a small flag(also known as the con flag) will appear on the screen on your dashboard. Which warns you that your console is about to get banned or might get banned anytime soon. So, you do get a chance to save your console from getting banned. If you see the con flag on the screen, immediately disconnect your connection from Xbox Live and you won’t get banned. There’s even a way to remove this “con flag” using a software called Con flag remover, but you’ll have to be expert on it before you attempt to do such action or execution as it might damage your console.

Also note that, they(Microsoft) only ban their modded Xbox 360 users once a year and it usually happens at the end of the year(like they did it back in last year’s November-December).So if you sign in now, you may not get banned but always be careful. And remember that it’s always up to you to take the risk.

Does MS release Xbox Live patches for download via PC? The latest I remember was from a long time ago. Anyway, I update from my Xbox and I’m not up to date on this fact.
Wud be better if it was like the PS3 updates – both from PS3 and download via PC.
But yeah, if you upgrade via pen drive you should be good.
