Call Of Duty: Black Ops Is Not Full HD On PS3 And Xbox 360
Experts at Digital Foundry have determined that Call of Duty: Black Ops doesn’t run at full HD resolutions on both the PS3 and Xbox 360, although the Xbox 360 version of the game is “clearly superior-looking”.
The Xbox 360 version runs at around 1040×600 resolution, with 2x multi-sampling anti-aliasing.
However the PS3 version runs at a reduced resolution of 960×544 with 2X MSAA.
However, DF notes that Black Ops is “a good-looking release on both formats”.
The PS3 version suffers from “screen tear” while the 360 version does not.
The biggest measure is whether the game runs at a silky-smooth 60FPS:
“While neither version is locked at 60FPS, there is what we’ve called in the past a ‘perceptual 60FPS’, where despite the frame-drops you still feel as though you’re getting the advantages of the fastest possible frame-rate,” DF notes.
“There’s a fine line in this perceptual divide, but when there can be as much as a 20FPS difference between the two versions, it’s safe to say that it’s the Xbox 360 version that more consistently delivers the feel of 60FPS gameplay.”
When it comes to 3D the difference is even more exaggerated. “The 3D version of Black Ops on PS3 really isn’t very satisfying at all, unfortunately…” says DF. “We’ve logged the PS3 game running as low as 20FPS [in 3D] – and that’s just in the very first street battle in the initial Cuba level.”
Ouch. It won’t surprise you to hear that Digital Foundry concludes the Xbox 360 game feels “more playable [and] satisfying” and is “clearly the pick of the two HD console releases”.
Our advice? Get the PC version if you’ve got the hardware to match. Otherwise, get the Xbox 360 version.

@sng425
completed the game its really good still i will still regard modern warfare 2 over black ops.But black ops do have some settings for its mission it never had before in the call of duty series.To me Black Ops the 3rd best game of the total call of duty series but the story was fantastic btw ๐

@Rabbi
I agree with you on that one. If you have a ton of cash to spend on your PC with the latest hardware, then PC rules absolutely. Even a mid-range PC can display graphics close to (if not better than) their console counterparts.
One thing though, are you really using 16X MSAA? I’m pretty certain even my HD 5870 would slow down to a crawl on those settings with Black Ops ๐

@TheGamingWiz
yeah i am using 16MSAA with maxed out settings.You can easily play black ops @1080p on maxed out settings cuz the game seems highly optimized thats why there is no lag.But the graphics of Black Ops seemed dated to me not something revolutionary.Even Medal of Honor has better graphics and physics than black ops ๐

I agree with you. But if you spend wisely, you’re set for a minimum of 2 years. This PC I built and use to play games was made in 2007. Except for a gfx upgrade to 5870 (the old ones died) it’s still going strong.

I’m in the 3rd or 4th mission in Black Ops. Can’t put it down. I’m also at the same point as you in BloodStone – it is getting a bit repetitive but I’ll finish it nonetheless. Oh, playing HAWX 2 right now. Good game ๐
