EA Or BioWare Will Never Be Profitable With Star Wars: The Old Republic
Speaking at London Games Conference, Bigpoint CEO Heiko Hubertz doubts that EA/BioWare’s upcoming MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic “will ever be profitable.”
“If you look at Star Wars from EA and BioWare, they estimated a development budget of over $100m,” he explained.
“This is an online game for many million of subscribers, so the publisher does not understand that a subscription model is not the future.
“With micro-transactions maybe I see the game having a chance but I don’t think that EA or BioWare will ever be profitable with this game.”
SWTOR is slated for PC sometime during spring 2011.

[…] Bioware’s upcoming MMO: Star Wars: The Old Republic is surely a big project with a huge scope. Not just in the game itself but in it’s budget. How big? How does a budget exceeding 100 million dollars sound? Some feature films don’t even reach that amount of money in terms of budgets backing them up. This shows how much gaming has come, not only do they take as much money, on in such cases more money, but they also offer experiences that rival those seen on the big screen. The hook is that video games are interactive and they provide for much more value for your money, that’s my opinion though. The main question here is, will The Old Republic make as much money as their expenses? If they do, that’s good, but as a business, you have to make sure your profit exceeds all your costs and expenses that went into the development of a product, in this case a game. Rant over, the game is sure to be a success, but a concern such as this is justifiable. Check out the article here. […]
