Hackers Discover PS3’s “Private Key”, Enables Running Of Custom Code And Dongle-less Jailbreak
During the 27th Chaos Communication Conference (27C3) in Berlin, a group of PS3 hackers united under the name ‘fail0verflow’ presented a new method of circumventing the built-in security of Sony’s PS3 claiming their initial security measures to be an epic fail.
The group claimed to have figured out the “private key” used by Sony to authorize code to run on PS3 systems and revealed it publicly for anyone to use.
The group demonstrated their exploits at the conference and plans to explain more when its own website launches.
The hack shown at the conference gives “full control of the PS3 system,” to the hacker without the use of a Jailbreak dongle.
However, the group later stated through a tweet on it’s twitter account that their goal is to have Linux running on all existing PS3 consoles, whatever their firmware versions are, even though the hack enables the user to run any homebrew or pirated games on a PS3 system without needing a Jailbreak USB dongle.
The slides of the presentation were made available through here.

Certainly, jailbreaking without an USB dongle would be great! Thankfully, I haven’t bought my Jailbreak device yet, so if this works, I won’t need to buy an additional Jailbreak dongle to hack my PS3. Besides, it’s really hard to detect those original ones with the upgradeable Atmel board integrated on it.

Looks like it’s time for me to buy a PS3 if this hack works, that is… 🙄
