E3 2008 At a Glance, Part 3: Clash Of The Consoles

Hi to all of the viewers of the blog Gamersworldbd. The thing that’s probably running through your mind at this moment might be: “Who the heck is this dude and what is he doing on this site?”. The answer to that question is quite simple really. I’m the newest editor to this site and you’ll be hearing a lot from me from now on (get used to it, okay). Well enough chit-chat, time to get onto the real deal… E3 2008.

For those of you who have no idea what this so called “E3” is, i’ll tell you something about it. E3 is an annual video game trade show which takes place every year and stands for Electronic Entertainment Expo. Many video game developers come to E3 in order to show of some of their upcoming games and game-related hardware. But the main thing at E3 is always the press conferences of the leading video game console companies. This years E3 consited of the press conferences of MicrosoftSony and Nintendo. But the main thing is, which company came out looking the best at this years E3? So without further ado lets dive into the press conferences of E3 2008.

Lets get into the Microsoft press conference and find out what they had planned for the Xbox 360. It seemed that Microsoft wanted their console to appeal to all types of gamers, not just hardcore gamers but also for the casual audience. They started off by giving more news and updates about highly anticipated titles such as Gears of War 2 and Fable 2. This was a good move that really seemed to please the audience at the conference. They also introduced the new Xbox Live interface which shows the use of an avatar for the system. This got the audience really exited, though some complained that the avatar system was a complete rip-off of the Miis that you could create from Nintendo’s system the Wii.

This is year at E3 it was clear that Sony wanted to prove that the PS3 could do anything. They showcased top titles such as Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, and Killzone 2. They also gave more news about the Playstation online social network known as Playstation Home. It seemed that Sony had managed to build the hype for Home, which they wanted to do from its announcement. They said that it would be a completley unique experience for both Hardcore and Casual gamers alike. They finished it off by saying that Home would be released some time this fall (let’s keep our fingers crossed then). They managed to keep the audience well entertained with a series of show-floor demos, mini-games and more about their Playstation Network (PSN). They also introduced a new update for the network which was the video store. It allows PS3 users to download full high-defination movies and TV episodes. All-in-all it wasn’t a bad day for Sony at E3 2008.

Nintendo showed that they still wanted the Wii to be a console for casual gamers at their press conference. They shoed us an upcoming music title for the system entitle Wii Music. The audience was quite impressed with this idea of Nintendo’s, though some still voiced concerns as to whether this title would be better than top music games Rock Band and Guitar Hero. They also announced the sequel to the top selling Wii game: Wii Sports. The name of the sequal is said to Wii Sports: Resort. The company also introduced a number of new hardwares for the system, one of which was was the WiiSpeak microphone.

In the end the question remained of who had conquered E3 and the answer to that was Sony. Sony offered a lot of much anticipated updates on hot games, and much needed software updates. They also presented everything in a really fun and innovative way that kept the audience wanting for more. In second place was Nintendo, which offered a number of great new titles and information regarding them. They also revealed new peripherals for their system, which proved to be a right decision for them, as it seemed to arouse even more excitement. In a dissapointing last place came Microsoft, who did manage to give lots of new updates but some of the audience weren’t that satisfied. Still E3 was a blast and its got me really exited about the new updates and has upped my hype for E3 2009.

  1. @ Nightway11

Great job with the article. I was just about to do some edits and publish it, but I see you’ve taken care of that. 😉

One thing though, it’s better if you didn’t make bold all the words. 🙂

  2. @ The Gaming Wiz/Mushfiqur Rahman

Thanks, and i’ll try not not to bold so much.

  3. Its great review on the Big 3 actually.

  4. I personally cant wait for Leipzig and TGS. Sony and EA representatives said that, major announcements are coming. My favorite E3 of all is 2006, with the festive mood and all. Also by that time I was in LA, but couldn’t go inside as I was below 18.

  5. @ Adnan

    Thanks for the comments

  6. I thought that Microsoft did a great job at E3, showing off new features and playable demos instead of over-glorified tech previews.
Nintendo was kinda sparse, but with their position right now…
Sony did a good job with presenting LittleBigPlanet, and some of the games we all knew they would have anyways.

  7. @ Adnan

And I didn’t have the luck to be in LA while there were booth babes and all those flashy shows. Come on man, couldn’t you have at least, faked your way inside. 😉

  8. @ Yert

Agreed with Yert. The point is Microsoft is the best in the world. Xbox 360 is the best. Sony is crap. Nintendo isn’t a next-generation console.

Actually I didn’t mean any of these. Please don’t flame me.

  9. Actually Microsoft showed 3 First party games onlyand bunch of third party games. I dont know why spend so much time touting third party game in a console conference, you must differentiate yourself from the competitors, and Third party is surely not the way to go. Sony on the other hand provided updates on the existing titles what will come this fall, and while introducing some new titles for next year. They didn’t waste time on third party titles, just a showed a brief montage on them.

I think the Sony conference was well rounded of them 3.

  10. I was unaware that anyone else had rights to Gears of War; Microsoft has exclusive rights to the IP and publishing rights.

I was also unaware that Fable 2 was third party. Or that Halo Wars was third party. Or 1 vs. 100. Or Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. Or Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise. Or the original Banjo-Kazooie game for Arcade. Or Scene it?. Or Your in the Movies. The list goes on.

I never said anything about the Wii not being “next gen” and I’m almost certain nothing I’ve written on this site calls Sony crap straight out. Love words in my mouth, they taste so nice.
