Xbox 360 Blu-ray, Will It Ever Happen?

Yes, that rumour has been going on for quite some time now. Will the 360 ever be able to us the Blu-ray format. Blu-ray is the new-generation optical disc format from Sony, developed by the Blu-ray Association. It can store 25 GB on single layer, and a whopping 50 GB on dual layer. Since it has so much space it’s mainly used to play high-definition movies and video games.

Xbox 360 Blu-ray player add-on?:

Microsoft invested a lot of money into the HD-DVD format and the loss of it was a very bad blow to the company. Since the defeat of the HD-DVD format, Sony has had a “one-up” on Microsoft. Sony’s decision to have a built in blu-ray drive for the PS3 has really helped them, as many people only bought the system as a blu-ray player (The PS3 is the cheapest, blu-ray player available on the market). Microsoft would be stupid to let their strongest competitor have the leading high-definition media, and not do something about it.

Blu-ray vs HD-DVD:

There were some hints form Microsoft insiders that the company is currently in development of a Blu-ray add-on for the system and that they plan to release it quite soon. Even if that proves to be wrong their there is another rumour that Nyko is developing a Blu-ray player for the 360. But before the 360 can have the format, they’ll have to make the deal with Sony, and I don’t think that Sony will let go of it that easy. [Ed – Sony doesn’t own the Blu Ray format, the Blu Ray Disc Association does]. Well these are all still rumours and we’ll just have to wait to realize the truth.

  1. Nope, Blu Ray won’t make it to the 360. It doesn’t make sense on so many levels. Think about it for a moment. I have a 360 and you bought one now with a Blu Ray drive. It’s going to create confusion among developers, should the game fit on a 4.7 GB DVD or a 25 GB BD?

But I see no reason for a Blu-Ray add-on. PS3 is selling like wildfire partly due to that it’s an inexpensive Blu-Ray player, and Microsoft can cash in on the potential.

  2. For gaming purpose, they will definitely skip BD, it will create a huge public outcry from the gamers who dont own Blu-ray. My uncle accidentally got me a HD-DVD with my 360, lol, I am thinking of selling it on Clickbd.com. And for people who already bought HD-DVD, I dont think they will be too happy. It would have been great if Microsoft provided some sort of exchange program you know?

The Xbox 360 uses DVD-9 which stores 8.54 GB of space.
