Kinect Hacked By Two MIT Students

Two MIT graduates successfully hacked Microsoft’s Kinect in a bid to win $2000 prize money by Adafruit Indsutries.

Adafruit Industries put up the prize money “because its directors believe that the technology used in Kinect is too useful to not be adapted to further uses.”

The hack bypasses Kinect’s security measures and allows control of the unit’s motors.

Microsoft issued the following statement to CNET:

“Microsoft does not condone the modification of its products. With Kinect, Microsoft built in numerous hardware and software safeguards designed to reduce the chances of product tampering.”

“Microsoft will continue to make advances in these types of safeguards and work closely with law enforcement and product safety groups to keep Kinect tamper-resistant.”

“It’s amazing hardware that shouldn’t just be locked up for Xbox 360,” said Phillip Torrone of Adafruit Industries in an email to CNET. “Its ‘radar camera’ being able to get video and distance as a sensor input from commodity hardware is huge.”

  1. i was utterly disgusted when i read this earlier today on gizmodo.
Like seriously, where do they plan to apply the technology. I heard rumors that this will be applied in tv and computer by 2012.

  2. It has its applications but whats the point? If you use this tech in another way, doesn’t it infringes on MS’s patents or something? ❓

  3. @The Gaming Wiz
