Gaming Analyst Michael Pachter Says PSP2 Will Be “Dead On Arrival”

By now you may be familiar with the Wedbush gaming analyst Michael Pachter who predicted Call of Duty would go pay-for-play.

Now he is predicting that Sony’s upcoming PSP2 will be “dead on arrival.”

“I think the PSP was dead on arrival and I think the PSP2 is going to be dead on arrival,” he said on his Pach Attack show.

He isn’t taking potshots at Sony but is weary of the overall handheld market.

“We’re approaching saturation in the handheld market,” he said. “We’re starting to see DS hardware sales crack, the iPod Touch is cutting into the handheld market. It looks to me like young kids are just as happy playing with the iPod Touch.

“The 3DS will prolong the handheld market for manufacturers, but ultimately I think handhelds are in trouble. What’s the difference if you play Tetris on an iPod Touch or on a DS? Well, you pay a buck on the iPod Touch and you pay $20 on the DS.

“After the 3DS has had its little rush I think the handhelds will continue to decline.”

So, what do you think? Are you excited about the PSP2 or believe it will have a hard time?

  1. That depends really, I mean, what will the PSP2 offer?
Better graphics? More Space? A touch screen? Downloadable games?
We’ve already seen all of that on the iPod/Phone/Pad, and unless Sony does something special, its not going to bode well for them.
The 3DS is a awesome handheld on the other hand, it’s graphics can generate that of a Gamecube, or so I have heard. And then there’s 3D 😀

Currently the appeal oh HD gaming on a portable screen is the deciding factor for me. And also the type of games that will be made for the PSP2.

That said, I’m even more excited about the 3DS particularly because of, yes, 3D 😎

  3. 3d is also a huge plus point for me for being xcited bout the 3DS. But what is confusing me is that, how are we going to view it. Will there be 3d glasses or another peripheral or maybe a completely new way.

As for the PSP2, i think sony is trying something new with just the right amount of enthusiasm to make it a success. The more i think about it, the more i realise that a PSP might even have bttr graphics than the 3DS, then just imagine what the PSP2 will have.

I also beleive that the PSP2 will have graphics comparable to the PS3 bcoz of the HD screen, and the games are gonna be backwards compatible with the PSP coz otherwise, SONY would lose a long standing market.

Also, remember that the early PS3s also had backward compatibility with PS1 AND PS2 games. But SONY scrapped the BC for PS2 games after the PS3 had a big enuf market.

The 3DS’s 3D screen works without the 3D glasses, I think it’s called stereotypical view or something. The only drawback is that it is better viewed currently in smaller screens, and the viewing angles are small, ala the use in the 3DS handheld.

HD graphics go so far on a small screen. On the big screen it is beautiful, but not so necessary as to ruin the gaming experience on a smaller screen, although it is welcome.

The 3DS has many other new functions as well. You can see a few on the following links:
    http://blogs.wsj.com/japanrealtime/2010/09/30/nintendos-3ds-delayed-but-saved-by-cool-features/

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_3DS

But what new amazing features will the psp2 bring? I honestly don’t know, unless it’s 3D, which would be cool, but already brought up by Nintendo, so nothing new.

Nope, 3DS won’t require viewing glasses. Actually, the technology used on the 3DS could also be used on 3D TVs but it would be way too expensive for a big screen and will have a very narrow viewing angle (move even a bit to the sides and everything will look blurry). But being a handheld, this won’t be a problem for 3DS as you’ll be playing it directly infront of you.

Backward compatibility would be a nice addition but won’t be a deal breaker for me. Also, is the exact screen size finalized? I hope its not too small.
