Lord of the Rings online MMO developer Turbine has said that revenue from the game has “tripled” after the game went free-to-play since September 2010. In addition, the MMO gained over one million new subscribers and saw an increase of 20% return of former users. “Free” is the new money these days with MMOs.
Sony CEO Howard Stringer has said at CES that the PlayStation Network has 60 million registered users. However, he did not mention how many of those accounts are active. For comparison’s sake, Xbox Live has around 25 million users, half of which are Xbox Live Gold subscribers. via Gamasutra
